Cumbria & Lancashire Police use ITL’s MyCheckr as part of their age verification plan

Innovative Technology (ITL) are working with local police teams in Cumbria and Lancashire to provide age estimation technology to both the night time economy and off licences to support with compliance. The police are supplying both MyCheckr and MyCheckrMini to venues when they fail test purchases to help them avoid fines and possible closure. ITL’s devices are designed to help business prevent minors accessing age-restricted goods and services.

Andy Bullock, Senior Business Development Manager for the UK market explains, “Our easy to use, standalone MyCheckr device is a hardware tool to help with the age check process for both age-restricted purchases and entry to hospitality venues. With a built-in camera and screen, convenience stores and 18+  venues can simply add age verification without any systems integration. Our MyCheckrMini  device is a more compact version without the screen feature. We first introduced our technology to the police at an Institute of Licensing event, and have since had various discussions in collaboration with our trading partner E-Service who are supplying MyCheckr to help them prevent suspension or revocation.”

Scott Adams, Harm Reduction Sergeant, Cumberland NPT, commented, “The MyCheckr range has provided us with a clear age verification plan. We are using the mini device in the night time economy and customers are taking a keen interest. It’s helping Police Officers engage in conversations and break down barriers. Security Industry Authority (SIA) are impressed with how quickly it works with the simple red and green light identification process. And customers are embracing the technology too, they are keen to see if they pass and are supportive, producing identification when requested.”

Scott continued, “We have also begun to use MyCheckr within test purchase operations around off licences premises. Where venues fail, we show them the device and ask them to start using the technology which shows they are taking all reasonable steps to improve age verification practices. When shop owners hear the cost of the device against persistent sales fines, they have been very keen to support and install. I believe this device provides us with robust and easy to use age verification which removes human error and develop best practice for venues.”

Ste Connolly, Police Licensing officer at Lancashire Constabulary added, “Following a review of a Premises Licence for persistently selling alcohol at an Off Licensed premises in Preston, we now have a premises that must use ITL’s age check device to help minimise future issues. It’s use has very specific conditions being imposed on the licence and should be used for all transactions involving the sale / supply of alcohol and in conjunction with physical or digital proof of age check. I believe it’s definitely a useful piece of tech that should be embraced especially as we move ever closer to digital proof of age.”

Andy concluded, “Our tech is highly accurate and because no images or data are stored customers can be sure that their privacy is protected.  It’s proving to be a useful guide for staff to assist with the sometimes difficult task of asking a customer for ID and can often help avoid confrontation.   It’s great working with the Police to provide a robust and practical age verification solution to help with their overall enforcement plans to protect both local businesses and their customers.”
