Leading age & identity verification technology provider, Innovative Technology (ITL), have announced the first deployment of the ITL Connect solution working with their MyCheckr age estimation technology at Mellor’s Service Station in Wantage, Oxfordshire. The forecourt shop uses MyCheckr to perform age checks to prevent underage access to the shop’s Beer Cave.
John Vallis, Senior Business Development Manager of Biometric Solutions for ITL said, “We are excited to announce the first install of ITL Connect in the field. MyCheckr age check hardware device is positioned at ‘The Cellar’ entrance where alcohol is displayed. It’s really simple to use and provides a quick, clear result to the customer with the screen turning green if the age check is passed and red if estimated to be underage. Using ITL Connect, an alert is sent to staff if a potentially underage customer attempts to access and they can remotely trigger the door to open if they believe the customer is old enough or perform an ID check.
For customers clearly overage the entire process is seamless and very fast (under 1 second), plus it’s privacy-preserving with no images or data stored. A real game-changer for helping retailers prevent age-related access control and bolstering the Challenge 25 policy giving staff the confidence to ask for ID when required.”
Using ITL Connect customers can link and manage multiple MyCheckr devices and receive instant notifications on a mobile device or tablet via the ITL Connect App for any underage entry attempts. The age estimation technology itself does not allow the alcohol purchase, rather it controls access to where these age-restricted products are located and staff at the checkout still make the final decision. All interactions are logged and reports can be produced for compliance audits.
Luxman Selvarajah, Managing Director of Krisco Services Group which operates the forecourt said, “A customer approaches the cellar which is locked. Facial age estimation algorithms determine if the customer is over 25, when the age check is passed the door automatically unlocks and opens. If a customer appears underage the cashier receives an alert and then they can make the decision if they are old enough to enter the cellar or need to show ID. This is especially useful and effective as there is not a direct line of sight from the cashier positions to the entrance of the Beer Cave. The technology takes some of the awkwardness out of asking for ID, and the pressure off cashiers. It also automatically generates refusal logs and robust compliance reports for Trading Standards officers.”
Concluding John said, “Great to be working with Luxman and we look forward to future installs to expand the age check capabilities at Mellor’s forecourt. We have several biometric solutions that can be deployed at different touchpoints within a store. Employees can easily be added to the system so access is automatically granted for any young staff members who would of course fail the age check otherwise. Our technology is an affordable tool for any responsible retailer to help protect the business, give staff an extra layer of security when asking for ID and even act as a theft deterrent. Not only does this technology help prevent minors accessing age restricted areas and products – it enhances the overall customer experience and improves staff efficiency.”
