Innovative Technology (ITL) have successfully renewed and enhanced their Primary Authority Partnership with Buckinghamshire and Surrey (BSTS) Trading Standards. This partnership is related to the use of their age estimation technology for retailers selling age restricted goods.
John Vallis, Senior Business Development Manager for ITL’s age & identity technology said, “We are delighted to announce that BSTS Primary Authority has observed the operation of MyCheckr, MyCheckr Mini and ICU Lite devices vigorously, and for the second year running, they are satisfied that they can legally be used in a retail setting to provide a visual guide to sales staff as to whether customers look age 25 or over. One key bit of additional advice included in the partnership this year is that our ITL Connect Hub and App can also be used in a self-checkout environment for all products including alcohol. ITL Connect enables retailers to manage multiple devices and receive instant notifications for any underage purchase attempts for staff to remotely approve or deny. This partnership with Buckinghamshire & Surrey gives our customers the confidence that our technology can legally be implemented within our customers’ own age verification policies, for both manned and supervised self-service tills.”
Joanne Cook, Senior Trading Standards Officer commented, “Primary Authority provides ITL with an additional layer of reassurance for their customers that their solutions can help businesses comply with the requirements of age restricted legislation for all products including alcohol. ITL’s devices can be used in a supervised self-checkout area, or as a guide to the member of staff on a manned checkout, who can then make the final decision as to whether the customer is old enough or not to make the purchase. Underage sales is a big area for us and retailers need to practice due diligence by having an effective age verification policy in place, and ensuring it is monitored to improve any weaknesses. This piece of technology is great for bolstering protection and takes away the human element by reducing responsibility on staff to make a judgment on a person’s age, which is often a really difficult thing to do”.
Concluding John said, “This partnership supports retailers using our age estimation products in the fight to prevent minors accessing alcohol, tobacco and vapes. Our technology can help responsible retailers actively demonstrating compliance and we look forward to continuing our work with BSTS to provide advice in this crucial area of age restricted sales.”
Our Solution to Age Verification
ITL’s age & identity verification solutions are designed to provide anonymous age estimation to assist the till operator in the vital decision-making step to determine a customer’s age to support the Challenge 25 retail policy. The devices anonymously estimate a customer’s age by analysing their facial features, and clearly conveys that result to both the till operator and customer. The Primary Authority Scheme allows businesses to partner with a local authority, who can then provide advice and guidance in relation to compliance.
