Innovative Technology (ITL) are celebrating a third year of their Primary Authority Partnership with Buckinghamshire and Surrey (BSTS) Trading Standards. Primary Authority is a statutory scheme that allows an eligible business to form a legally recognised partnership with a single local authority in relation to regulatory compliance. This partnership is in relation to the provision of ITL’s age estimation technology for retailers selling age-restricted goods.
John Vallis, Senior Business Development Manager for ITL’s age & identity technology said, “Delighted to announce that we have renewed our Primary Authority partnership with Buckinghamshire & Surrey Trading Standards, with updated guidance and advice on how our age estimation technology can be legitimately operated in a retail setting. This is great news for our customers as it provides an additional layer of confidence and reassurance that our technology successfully meets legal compliance with local authority backing. Following the in-depth assessment of our technology, BSTS confirmed that it can be used as a helpful visual guidance to staff at the point-of-sale, for both supervised self-service and attended till points. Plus, when our devices are configured with the MyConnect Hub, notifications of potential underage purchase attempts can be automatically posted to the MyConnect App – a great additional safety net for the retailer. Age checks are anonymous with no data stored, customers can trust that their privacy is assured.”
ITL provides a range of products including MyCheckr, MyCheckrMini and ICU Lite which use AI-powered technology to accurately and quickly estimate a customer’s age. The technology is being implemented by retailers across the UK and Europe who sell age restricted products such as alcohol or tobacco.
Joanne Cook, Senior Trading Standards Officer, commented, “Fantastic news that ITL have updated their agreement with us. We vigorously tested their latest devices and are satisfied that they can positively support a retailer’s existing age-check policy. The guidance includes clear and practical steps for frontline staff when installing ITL’s technology with the intention of enhancing an existing age-check policy rather than replacing it. Human intervention is still key especially when it comes to alcohol sales, but the addition of MyConnect makes it easy for self-checkout staff to approve or deny the purchase. We welcome the use of technology to help reduce underage sales and it’s great to see the positive impact of ITL’s age estimation technology on the convenience and retail sector.”
Concluding John said, “We look forward to continuing our work with Trading Standards to support retailers adhere to the Challenge 25 age verification policy, and ensure lawful and consistent deployment of our tech.”
