Facial recognition technology is entirely different from age estimation technology. Age estimation is completely anonymous, meaning you cannot uniquely identify an individual from the data or the result presented. Simply put, the information we handle cannot be used to identify a single person. For example, many people share the same age, so you cannot identify a specific person based solely on their age. Furthermore, no data is stored on the device—everything processed is deleted immediately afterward. This means in order to lawfully estimate a person’s age, you do not require specific consent from the person to do so.
The system uses the emerging field of Artificial Intelligence to estimate a customer’s age based on their facial features. We have developed our own hardware and software to perform this task, achieved by training specialised algorithms called Neural Networks. We train the Neural Networks by showing them millions of faces with known ages, allowing them to learn which facial features are related to a specific age. When a face appears in front of the device, the Neural Networks use what they have learned to estimate the person’s age.
No, none of our devices store any personal data.
Our solutions run entirely offline and can typically estimate age in under 1 second, making the process seamless. This makes it ideal for retail, self-service and convenience stores selling age-restricted goods. Such rapid age verification processing customer queues don’t build up from performing manual checks. This helps retain good customer experience and protects your establishment from breaching age restrictions by preventing underage sales.
The system has its own face detection algorithm. Similar to the camera app on your phone, it can automatically and anonymously detect when a face is present. Once a face is detected, the age estimation process begins. All of this is achieved in under one second.
The camera is normally placed in portrait mode and has a relatively large field of view. This means that the camera can accommodate the measurement of a diverse range of heights. Our support team is always on hand to advise on mounting positions to suit any particular application or environment.
Yes, we have trained the algorithm to work with glasses, hats, beards, etc. We continue to refine the algorithms, but as you can see, we already have world-leading accuracy and performance.
While our products do not store any personal data or images of faces, the system can save analytical data. For example, it can record the number of checks performed, the times the checks were conducted, the age profile, and the gender of the customer. All of this data is completely anonymous and customers cannot be identified, but it provides useful information that can be used to present an audit log of the age-check procedure, gather data on busy periods in the store, and analyse the gender and age profile of customers.
