Our webinar hosted on 27th February 2025 by marketing manager Dayna Patterson discussed how biometric technology can be used to assist with facial age estimation during the sale of age restricted products such as alcohol, tobacco, vapes, knifes and lottery tickets. Retailers, journalists and industry bodies all attended to hear how in-person age checks in the retail and hospitality industry can sometimes face challenges when adhering to Challenge 25 and how technology can help.

To kick off the webinar Dayna showed the audience images of three famous people of varying ages and asked the attendees which they would ask for ID. The results of the poll showed that it’s not always easy to identify people’s age and we don’t always agree, illustrating just how subjective the age check process can be.

Our panellists:

Julian Taylor-Green, SPAR Franchisee, discussed the impact of facial estimation technology in his store.

Hemanshu Patel, Deputy Vice President of The Federation of Independent Retailers (The FED) discussed the wider landscape of Challenge 25 for independent retailers.

Joanne Cook, Senior Trading Standards Officer, Buckinghamshire & Surrey Trading Standards, discussed regulatory compliance, standards and test purchases.

Andrew O’Brien, Biometrics Product Manager discussed the reasons behind development of our MyCheckr family of biometric facial age estimation devices.

Key takeaways:

When it comes to age estimation, front-line retailers are constantly performing it, but are often faced with challenges. Human judgement during the age check process is influenced by a number of factors such as pressure, intimidation, mood, fatigue, distractions, unconscious bias (people tend to be more accurate when estimating people close to their own age) and even confrontation when asking for ID.

Hemanshu shared alarming stats from a recent FED survey (October 2024) which found that when questioning their members 47% of their employees had been threatened or suffered abuse and violence when asking for proof of age. Using MyCheckr in his own store is successfully resolving issues linked to age checks at the counter. Plus, other retail members who have installed MyCheckr are also reporting a reduction in confrontation with staff attributing the decision to request ID on the machine, which cuts the debate, helping with Challenge 25 compliance.

Julian revealed the benefits of having MyCheckr installed in his SPAR franchise in Western Downs, explaining how the technology is successfully deterring theft in his store as well as helping with compliance regarding enforcement checks that take place. A key challenge is the significant range of age related products sold, in particular isotonic drinks which are popular with minors who often come back with parents to attempt a proxy sale. ITL’s technology takes the heat out of the argument, keeps aggression at bay and from a security point of view, helps deter people from even attempting to purchase. Customers have taken well to the new tech and come prepared with ID to ease the process. It also helps with test purchasing, the lottery body and local authority checks as it provides an audit trial.

Joanne from Trading Standards stated that underage sales (especially from voluntary age restricted energy drinks) was a big area for them, highlighting the importance of policy and due diligence to protect from fines or enforcements. Due diligence and defence is two-fold; having an effective age verification policy in place, and ensuring it is monitored to improve any weaknesses. Joanne praised our technology commenting that it takes away the human element and reduces responsibility on staff to make a judgment on a person’s age, which is often a really difficult thing to do.

Partnering for Compliance and Advancing Age Verification

The Primary Authority Scheme allows businesses to partner with a local authority, who can then provide advice and guidance. Buckinghamshire & Surrey have a partnership in place with us that gives our customers the confidence that our technology can legally be implemented within our customers’ own age verification policies, for both manned and self-service tills.

There is growing concern about youth access to age restricted goods (an increase in knife crime being a key factor) with increasing pressure from government to protect our youth. A key reason why we created a solution to assist retailers with this critical issue in society.

ID check point is an issue. Participation in the Home Office Sandbox trial in 2022 found that technology can reduce confrontation during the age check process. Staff have seconds to make the split decision and human judgment is affected by a number of factors. Our technology takes the onus off the till operator and puts the onus on the device.

This flash point at the till is experienced by retailers globally and is not just a UK problem, Feedback from French tobacco sops where we have over 300 plus units deployed include the deterrent effect of the technology.

GDPR compliant age estimation – the data is not classed as special category as it cannot be used to uniquely identity an individual.

The panel concluded that age estimation technology is the future for retailers, it takes away the risk, it’s clear and concise and makes it easy for staff to ensure they are complying with the regulations and requirements in place.  Although the UK have led the way with this tech, the  issue of how to prevent youth access to age restricted products is global, so more and more countries will undoubtedly begin to promote the use of age estimation technology in the future.
