New Euro bank notes to be introduced from 2013

The European Central Bank (ECB) and the national central banks (NCBs) of the Eurosystem are to introduce a second series of euro banknotes. Called the “Europa” series, it will include a portrait of Europa – a figure from Greek mythology and the origin of the name of the continent Europe – in the watermark and the hologram. The new banknotes will be introduced gradually over several years, starting with the €5 banknote in May 2013.

The first Euro bank notes were introduced over ten years ago and a number of security features have been enhanced to help make the banknotes even more secure. Three new features, the portrait watermark, portrait hologram and emerald number have been unveiled by the ECB and like the first series, they will have the “ages and styles” design and the same dominant colours but will be easily distinguishable from the first series. The Europa series will have the same denominations as its predecessor, i.e. €5, €10, €20, €50, €100, €200 and €500, and they will be introduced in ascending order. ie. the new €10 banknote will follow the €5.

The existing Euro bank notes will stay in circulation alongside the new issue notes, but will gradually be withdrawn and eventually cease to be legal tender. The date when this occurs will be announced well in advance. The Europa series €5 banknote will be unveiled in full on 10 January 2013 and will be in general circulation from May next year. To make sure you are ready to accept the new style €5 euro notes the Innovative Technology datasets department will update all applicable Euro currency datasets for the NV9, NV10, NV9 USB, NV10 USB, NV11, NV200, BV20 & BV100 and make them available for download before the new €5 note is released. Please take this time to ensure you have the necessary DA2 or DA3 programming kits and data flash memory cards to easily reprogramme your ITL validators. These programming tools are available from your local office or on-line through our Web-Store.

The next Technical Bulletin will focus on the support tools available to reprogramme our validator range. In the mean time a video guide to using the DA3 can be found on our You Tube channel or instructions are available on our website within Technical Support - FAQs.
